New Technology in Periodontics Pittsburgh Pa

The Perioscope Alternative

Dr. Weingarden’s office is one of the only offices in the Tri-State area currently providing the Perioscope option. In keeping with our commitment to stay on the forefront of technological innovations and provide the highest quality of care, Dr. Weingarden and hygienists have received special training in the use of the Perioscope.

If periodontal surgery has been recommended for you, the Perioscope may be a conservative alternative treatment. Feel free to contact us for a second opinion.

What is Perioscopy?

Perioscopy is a new, non-surgical procedure to treat periodontal disease. The dental field has now joined other medical fields in adopting a minimally invasive treatment that can take the place of surgery in certain situations. This means that there is no cutting, no stitches and no prolonged healing.

The perioscope features miniaturized digital video technology that enables your clinician to diagnose and treat areas below the gum line without surgery. For the first time, clinicians can see magnified details of tooth anatomy and deposits below the gum line to diagnose and treat periodontal disease in a minimally invasive way.

A miniature camera is attached to a tiny probe and then gently placed below the gum line. The images are immediately displayed on a chair side video screen for your clinician and you to see. The Perioscope provides up to 48 times magnification, showing minute details under the gums that otherwise might be missed.

Is the Perioscope right for you?

If you have one or more pockets over 4mm deep you might be a candidate for the perioscope. If you are being treated for periodontal disease, the goal of the perioscope is to get a tooth root exceptionally clean so that the gums and other surrounding tissues can become healthier. Perioscopy is especially effective in the “esthetic zone” or the teeth you see when you smile.

How long does it take? Does it hurt?

The Perioscope procedure, due to its intricate nature, generally takes a little longer than a standard appointment. Treatment usually takes about 1-2 hours. Generally, there is little, if any, discomfort during a Perioscope appointment. Local anesthesia is provided for your complete comfort.

We are pleased to be able to provide you with this state-of-the-art treatment alternative and would be happy to discuss any questions you might have.
