Periodontics

Periodontal Examination

Includes a screening for oral cancer, assessment for gum disease, and evaluation of smile and bite issues. During your exam, a small instrument called a periodontal probe will be placed gently in the pocket between the teeth and gums. 1-3mm is usually considered healthy. 4-5mm may indicate mild periodontitis, 5-6mm suggests moderate periodontitis and 7mm or greater may indicate severe periodontitis. In addition to probing measurements, x-rays may be taken to evaluate if there is any loss of the bone supporting the teeth.
