Dr. Weingarden utilizes the SoftLase laser in soft tissue surgeries. A few of the procedures include gingevectomy/gingivoplasty, frenectomy, soft tisse biopsies and gingival sculpting associated with periodontal plastic surgical procedures because of its hemostatic effect. Additionally, they have been used in treatment of drug-induced gingival overgrowth, either alone or in conjunction with conventional surgery.

Although there has been a great deal of commercial advertising by the laser companies regarding treatment of gum disease with the laser, there is very little scientific evidence to support their claims. The American Academy of Periodontology recently published their view on the efficacy of periodontal laser treatment.
